Safemiles ELD supports certified telematics-based electronic data transfer of ELD records to authorized safety officials in compliance with FMCSA ELD technical specifications. Under 49 CFR §395 and FMCSA guidance, telematics transfer must include both wireless Web Services and Email. Supported Data Transfer Mechanisms Telematics – Web Services: Secure electronic transfer of the FMCSA-compliant ELD output file via HTTPS/SOAP Web Services to an authorized safety official. Telematics – Secure Email: Electronic transfer of the ELD output file as an email attachment using the vendor-configured FMCSA email address provided in the device. The authorized safety official may provide a routing code for inclusion in the message. Driver Instructions (Step-by-Step) The driver logs into the Safemiles ELD application. From the main menu, the driver selects Data Transfer or DOT Inspection / Generate ELD Output File. The driver selects the Generate ELD Output File option and chooses the requested date range (current day and past 7 days). The driver selects Telematics as the transfer category. The driver chooses between Web Services or Email as the transfer method. For Web Services: Confirm connection and submit the output file. For Email: Enter the authorized safety official’s routing code (if provided) and send the email with the file attached. The Safemiles ELD transmits the file electronically. The system displays a confirmation upon successful transfer to the authorized safety official. Safemiles ELD continuously monitors its operation to detect and record ELD malfunctions as defined under 49 CFR §395.34. When a malfunction is detected, the system automatically records the event, displays a visible alert to the driver, and retains the malfunction information until it is corrected. Safemiles ELD supports detection and reporting of the following malfunction categories: Power Compliance Malfunction Engine Synchronization Malfunction Timing Compliance Malfunction Positioning Compliance Malfunction Data Recording Compliance Malfunction Data Transfer Compliance Malfunction Upon a malfunction, the driver is notified through the ELD interface and is required to follow FMCSA guidelines, including maintaining paper logs if necessary. All malfunction events are included in the ELD records and available for inspection by authorized safety officials. Safemiles ELD ensures proper tracking, alerting, and documentation of malfunctions in compliance with FMCSA ELD requirements.
